Studies indicate that between half and three quarters of the population will experience spinal symptoms at some time in their adult life. In fact, the most common cause of disability in the population under the age of 45, is low back pain.
The anatomy of the spine includes a network of joints, bones, discs, and nerves aligned in a curved position supported by muscles and ligaments to form a complex functional unit. Back problems develop due to trauma, poor postural habits, repetitive job requirements and/ or activities of daily living. It’s no wonder people experience spinal problems so commonly.

An evaluation is performed initially by a physical therapist. This evaluation includes obtaining a detailed subjective history followed by assessment of both active range of motion and the effects of repeated movements on the patient's symptoms. The evaluation always concludes with educating the patient on the possible treatment options as well as developing a personalized home exercise program.
Treatment will include supervised and frequent reassessment of the symptoms, followed by progression of exercises designed to both reduce the patient's symptoms and stabilize the spine to help improve functional mobility.
The goal of physical therapy is to increase functionality of the patient. Ultimately, it’s through patient education and a proper therapy regimen, that will help maintain and hopefully improve the activities that have been difficult for so long.
